Calm Pink with Copic Markers

Real shade is not darker color, real shade is desaturated color.

To create the desaturated colors that Copic Marker does not make, Vanilla Arts Company teaches Online Workshops using the underpainting method. Students learn to layer colors realistically rather than blend.

Underpainting creates natural colors found in everyday life.

Hawaiian Pink

Elena’s Advice:

Pink, pink, pink! I love it in every shade and flavor.

But a lot of pink is… well… it’s a lot of pink.

More pink is not what we need in the shadows and shady areas. So how do we tame a savage pink?

GREEN!

Green sits on the opposite side of the colorwheel from magenta. They’re complements. When you mix complements, they neutralize each other.

The trick is that with Copic underpainting, you have to search for a green which can slide in underneath the pink and sit quietly. Most of the greens I tried insisted on screaming “HEY, LOOK AT ME! I’M GREEN AND I’M HERE UNDER THE PINK!”

Wouldn’t you know, I was about to give up on the idea when I stumbled upon G40. Why do I not use this marker more? It’s gorgeous by itself but it’s also a beautiful partner in this pink combination.

G40 is a delicate green which works wonders underneath RV63. It’s just the right touch of neutralization. Then I switched to R81 for a bit of brightness. RV00 rounds out the combination, the high solvent content helps to smooth out all the previous red and magenta.

Try it, it’s a really nice combo!
