Have you ever noticed how the most vibrant Copic Marker inks look duller when applied to white paper? It’s not the ink, it’s your blending technique! Natural vibrancy comes from layers, not blends. It’s an easy technique to learn. Learn to create glowing colors that look lit from within.
For Glowing colors, stop Blending!
Have you ever seen a painting that simply glows?
It’s hard to describe but you know it when you see it. There’s something in the way it was painted that makes it seem like there are lights on the back of the canvas. It looks lit from within.
Why can’t we get that effect with Copic Markers or colored pencils?
Oh, but you can!
But you must give up your normal blending technique to do it.
Transparent inks look duller when applied to white paper. To compensate for this, many colorers choose extra bright or florescent markers when they want vibrancy.
But then everything looks garish!
Stop.
You can create inner glows without glow-in-the-dark ink!
The trick is in the layers.
Normally, these oranges would be colored with 3 orange markers- a light, medium, and dark YR marker.
To get a natural yet stunning glow, I underpainted the oranges with yellow and shaded with YG. Then I added the orange on top.
The result is pure sunshine.
Underpainting isn’t a shading method.
Underpainting is color science. You as an artist control how we see your colors.
Yes, you can color. Coloring and traditional marker blending is lots of fun.
