Coloring from your imagination is a myth.

Realism comes from real references.

Fine Art Techniques for Colorists - Intro to Reading References

"Box of Colors" advanced Marker + Pencil coloring lesson from Amy Shulke of VanillaArts.com

You’ve practiced coloring for a while now.

You’ve taken lots of classes, followed tons of tuts, and colored every project you can get your hands on.

Over the years, you’ve gotten faster and projects feel easier now…

But still, you’ve never really colored anything that looks realistic.

Maybe it’s you?

You’re beginning to think maybe you’re not talented enough to color objects that pop off the page with dimension and life. Perhaps that kind of coloring is simply out of reach?

But wait a minute… are you waiting for realism to just accidentally happen?

ADVANCED ARTISTIC COLORING

MARKER + COLORED PENCIL INSTRUCTION WITH AMY SHULKE

Realism doesn’t happen automatically with lots of practice and experience.

Tips, tricks, and nifty texture techniques promise realism but the truth is, shortcuts never look real.

And if shortcuts are all you’re doing, that’s all you’ll get.

What does look real?

The real stuff in the real world around you. So why aren’t you looking at reality instead of searching for better shortcuts?

Think you can’t do it? Think it’s too hard? Think again.

Reading references is easier than you think.

Let me show you how!

Professional Illustrator, Amy Shulke shares the secret to realistic coloring

Box of Colors will change the way you color forever…

This isn’t a gimmicky colorist technique, I learned how to read references for realism back in art school.

Too many colorists assume references are just for the pros— but once you learn to use them, they make coloring so much easier!

If you want to color with realism, you’ve got to know what real looks like.

  • Advanced Level

  • Copic Markers & Prismacolor Pencils

  • Minimal Supply lists

  • Maximum Impact

Realism is easy when you color with your brain.

Everything you need to create the look of life…

…is in this little rainbow box.

Art is more than monkey-see, monkey-do-it-just-like-the-instructor.

You’re ready for more. You need your own Box of Colors.

We’re not coloring messy paint pans because they’re cute…

This is a nitty-gritty lesson, handing you the keys to photorealism.

The best part: We repeat the lesson twenty-seven times; practicing your new realism skills on a rainbow of colors.

And because this is an Amy-Lesson, I've packed a bleepin' truckload of color theory into every part of the project.

I hold your hand at the start but by the last pan, you’ll be capturing realism with confidence, all on your own!

IT'S TIME FOR A NEW KIND OF CLASS:

  • SKILL

Read surface forms and texture with accuracy. When the mechanics of rendering becomes natural and comfortable, your mind is free to experiment and play.

ART IS EASIER WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORRIED ABOUT TECHNIQUE

  • VERSATILITY

What we do with markers and pencils isn't magic. Coloring Theory should work with watercolor, pastels, or any other medium. It's not about the product, it's how we use the color.

COLOR IS UNIVERSAL. COLORING LESSONS SHOULD BE TOO

  • INDEPENDENCE

"How to color a set of watercolors" is useless unless you plan to color paint the rest of your life. By learning to read references, you can apply today's lesson to an endless variety of objects.

COLOR WHATEVER YOU WANT, WHENEVER YOU WANT

ADVANCED COLORING SKILLS REQUIRED

Beginner techniques like blending and layering will not be covered in this course. You must be so comfortable with blending that you barely think about it as you do it.

To master beginner skills before taking Box of Colors, I have two skill-building courses. More info here.

Underpainting is used extensively in this course and will not be covered in depth either.

To learn the process, I have a pre-requesite class. More info here.

  • The line art is included with the printable workshop materials.

No secondary or outside purchase necessary.

  • Sorry but no. You must be logged into your account here at Teachable to view the videos.

  • Sorry, but no. We’re doing fine art techniques which require artist grade alcohol markers. Despite what you’ve heard or read, inexpensive markers are not the same as Copic and Olo.

Inexpensive markers can not handle the kind of heavy layering and color mixing we do in my lessons.

If you absolutely must use student or craft grade markers, then I’m the wrong instructor for you. There are other instructors who can teach you to use them.

  • This course has a recommended supply list but the point is to learn independence and to use the colors you observe.

I recommend using my supply list in the beginning, then gradually add more of your own color choices as you progress through the project.

  • This is a one-time, single payment purchase with no additional billing.

We use the Teachable platform to process your purchase. Teachable uses Stripe to accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover payments. We do not accept PayPal deposits but you may use a PayPal debit card.

Several major currencies are accepted but prices are listed in USD. VAT is automatically charged where applicable. We absolutely can not waive VAT charges.

  • If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact me at info@vanillaarts.com within the first 48 hours for a full refund minus processing fees.

Note: A refund withdraws you completely from the workshop. You will lose access to the course panel, all materials, and any associated forum.

Repeat refund requestors will be blocked from participation.
