You’ve learned how to blend…

SO WHY IS IT HARD TO COLOR LANDSCAPES?

"Lighthouse Collection" Intermediate level Introduction to Photorealism. Copic Markers + Colored Pencil mixed media. | VanillaArts.com

For a lot of people, “coloring” is the same as “blending”.

Which leaves you with streaky skies and trees that look like weird green clouds.

Hmmm… maybe blending is the wrong technique for backgrounds and scenery?

Fine Art Lessons for Colorists - Intro to Landscapes

AND NO, THAT RANDOM “TEXTURE TECHNIQUES” CLASS IS NOT THE ANSWER

"Lighthouse Collection" Intermediate level Introduction to Photorealism. Copic Markers + Colored Pencil mixed media. | VanillaArts.com

Sooner or later, colorists realize that blending isn’t the best technique for everything.

So we start collecting textures. “Here’s how to color woven fabric”, “Here’s how to color bricks”, “Here’s how to color water”

Which is fun when you’re making a page of random texture samples, but somehow these textures never look quite right in a project.

So you just give up and stick to what you know— blending.

But hang on, maybe the problem is you’re coloring great big landscapes exactly like you’d color a small daisy or a bite sized blueberry muffin?

Landscapes require bigger thinking, let me show you how.

Urban and landscape sketching is popular right now

But have you noticed sketchers mostly use fine-line pens and watercolor?

Which is weird because back in art school, the marker instructors told us markers were the perfect sketching tool.

I’d like to share the old-school marker indication process with you.

Improve your coloring by improving how you think about color

  • Intermediate Level

  • Copic Markers & Prismacolor Pencils

  • Minimal Supply lists

  • Maximum Impact

The big, wide world requires a big, wide technique.

IT'S TIME FOR A NEW KIND OF CLASS:

  • SKILL

Control markers and pencils with accuracy. When the mechanics of coloring becomes automatic, your mind is free to concentrate on the important aspects of art.

COLORING IS EASIER WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORRIED ABOUT TECHNIQUE

  • VERSATILITY

What we do with markers and pencils isn't magic. Coloring Theory should work with watercolor, pastels, or any other medium. It's not about the product, it's how we use the color.

COLOR IS UNIVERSAL. COLORING LESSONS SHOULD BE TOO

  • INDEPENDENCE

"How to color a lighthouse" is useless unless you plan to color lighthouses for the rest of your life. With fine art concepts, you can apply the lesson to an endless variety of objects.

  • No problem. Colored pencils are much easier than markers!

I don’t do anything fancy with pencils, anyway.

We cover the pencil technique in every demo and most marker people pick it up easily in just a few projects.

  • Sorry, but no. We’re doing fine art techniques which require artist grade alcohol markers. Despite what you’ve heard or read, inexpensive markers are not the same as Copic and Olo.

Inexpensive markers can not handle the kind of heavy layering and color mixing we do in my lessons.

If you absolutely must use student or craft grade markers, then I’m the wrong instructor for you. There are other instructors who can teach you to use them.

  • In my own work, I substitute colors all the time— but this is a class and you’re here to learn.

Not all markers and pencils behave the same way, even when the colors look similar. It’s a matter of chemistry and at this intermediate level, it’s safe to assume you’re not adept at making the correct chemical substitutions.

But here’s the important part: every substitution you make increases the difficulty of the project. Fighting with your art supplies will distract you from the lesson goals.

For your benefit, I highly recommend sticking to the recommended colors. They were chosen for a reason.
