Chanticleer is original digital line art by me, Amy Shulke of Vanilla Arts Company. For years, I’ve wanted to do a boldly colored rooster class and Father’s Day always seemed like a great excuse; but every time June rolled around, I’d get stuck postponing the rooster for some other in-demand subject. Not this year! 2021 is the year where we color all the projects I’ve been dreaming about!

If you’re looking for more photo references, this is an adult male Wellsummer, a breed which started in Holland but is also found roaming wild in Key West, Florida. Not every Key West rooster is a Wellsummer, check the color of the long feathers at the end of his wings, the Wellsummers are blue, not gold.

Chanticleer was colored on 89lb Cryogen cardstock in Curious Metallic White with Copic Markers and Caran d’Ache Pablo Colored pencils. I used my oversized printer because he’s just over 10 inches wide. I would have gone larger but I was worried about how to scan the

finished artwork for this guidebook. At this size, the project you see here had to be scanned in two parts and Photoshopped together. I do think this is a project worth doing large because you’ll have more room for feathery details.

Remember, if you lock yourself into thinking about feathers as feathers, you’ll end up with a bird covered in roofing shingles. Instead, treat the small feathers as fur and the large feathers like leaves. You’ll end up with more realistic looking feathers when you keep them light and fluffy.

Amy’s stamps are suitable for colored pencil, alcohol markers, pastels, watercolor....get creative!
