Chocolate Chip Cookies is original digital line art by me, Amy Shulke of Vanilla Arts Company. Food illustration has always been a secret passion of mine. It seems like such a standard art-form now but it wasn’t even on the career radar when I was young. It’s so weird that the idea of drawing the food we eat everyday never developed beyond classical still life paintings until cable food channels gave birth to hobby cooking fans.

The cookies here are moderate realism, exactly the style I’d work in if Bon Appétit or Cook’s Illustrated offered me a gig. The cookie pencils are unusual which allowed me to loosen up and just play with shapes rather than exacting realism. I hope this takes the pressure off you too. Food should be fun.

Chocolate Chip Cookies was colored on Stonehenge White with Copic Markers and Prismacolor Premier Colored pencils. You could easily substitute Cryogen Curious Metallic White. The project is oversized and required the use of my larger printer; the striped towel is almost 15 inches across. Please print this as large as you dare-- the bigger the cookie, the easier the realism will be. Tiny crumbs can be intimidating, so make the details larger and you’ll find it easier to keep the details in proper scale.

For those of you who took Marker Painting Foundations, think back to the Ice Cream Sandwich project. This is the advanced version of that beginner scumbling lesson. Look closely here and you’ll see the same techniques at work. Sneaky, eh?
