Cocoa Splash is an original line art drawing by me, Amy Shulke of Vanilla Arts Company. This is a new drawing for 2022 but we've been sitting on the idea for several years now, never really finding the right time, reference, or audience for a cocoa class.

Ideas can warp and change over time. All I started with is the fact that I drink a heck of a lot of cocoa, even in the summer. I'm not a coffee drinker but I love dark chocolate and adding a scoop of espresso powder to my morning cocoa is a nice wakeup.

Ordinary old daily life generates ideas. But honestly, I drink cocoa out of a travel mug because I'm a complete klutz. So no, my daily cocoa isn't much to look at, you can't even tell it's cocoa.

And if you search for photos of hot cocoa online, you soon notice that while there are many references to choose from, photographers don't find cocoa all that interesting either. They spiff it up with marshmallows, mountains of whipped cream, chocolate shavings, dripping chocolate syrup... everything but the actual cocoa.

So the reason we've sat on this project for years is because I was waiting for the right photograph.

Enjoy the challenge of coloring deep, dark browns and how they contrast so beautifully with Robin's Egg blue. Or change the color of your teacup. Pink always looks great with chocolate brown!

And hey, try some espresso in your hot cocoa next time. It's delicious!
