Grape Harvest is an original line art drawing by me, Amy Shulke of Vanilla Arts Company. I created this image in 2017 for a local class of advanced students. It was intended to be an autumn challenge and the coloring process was inspired by the work of Rembrandt.

When I hear the name Rembrandt, my first thought is always "brown". Now brown doesn't even make it onto my top 10 list of favorite colors but if I'm going to do brown, I'm going to follow Rembrandt's lead. He's the master of creating deep, dark, moody environments using a thousand shades of brown. In photos, his paintings are amazing but in person, they steal your breath away.

Copic students are often reluctant to use their dark E markers and I went overboard, challenging them to add underpaint and even extra blue Distress ink to take the browns even deeper. Remember, if you cheat the darks, your box will look shallow and you risk damaging the realism by creating a box too small to realistically hold your grapes. Be bold and go dark!

A note about the violet markers in this project: We're using 2 photo references and both show grapes that are far more BV than V. This was a conscious decision I made after my daughter glanced over my shoulder at the photo reference and said "Oh, you're working on blueberries today?" Keep in mind that photographers can get away with many things that painters can not. We don't want someone to think you're silly for coloring the grapes blue, so stick with the V markers and we'll add blue highlights later.

Amy’s stamps are suitable for colored pencil, alcohol markers, pastels, watercolor....get creative!
