Poinsettia Navideña is an original line art drawing by me, Amy Shulke of Vanilla Arts Company. I created this image in 2021 as a Folds & Waves challenge for The Underpainters group of advanced independent students.

My original idea was to mimic the look of mid-century mod graphic illustrations, the kind which usually ended up on greeting cards or in advertisements in women's magazines... but as usual, my projects tend to take on a life of their own.

And that's not a bad thing. It's different than I envisioned but that's okay.

In general, I'm an intuitive colorer which means I use photo references as guides but when I accidentally do something which looks good, I don't erase the mark and start over. Remember, just because something doesn't match the reference doesn't mean it won't look real.

Experience helps me decide which errors look good enough to repeat. That's the intuitive part. I've also drawn and colored enough folds, waves, and flower petals over the years that I can make a mistake look good.

My wish is that you'll get to the same level, where you're so comfortable rendering folds and waves that you no longer struggle to decide if something is turned upwards, inwards, outwards, or downwards. Too many colorers struggle to interpret which way a petal bends when the truth is, with the right mindset, you can color it either way.

You can get there too, it just takes a lot of petal practice. Color Poinsettia Navideña at least twice and see if you can't flip a few petals next time. Turn something inwards instead of outwards. It's good practice!
