Once you learn to blend…
WHAT COMES NEXT?
For a lot of colorists, nothing comes next.
You just keep on blending.
Sure, you buy more colors and new line art, but you keep doing the same ol’ blends until you get bored and switch to knitting.
But wait, there is something beyond basic blending
Fine Art Lessons for Colorists - Intro to Detail, Pastel Shading, and Intro to Complementary Underpainting
COLORING INSTRUCTION SHOULD BE MORE THAN RANDOM TIPS & TECHNIQUES
Techniques can only get you so far…
Unfortunately, they’re the easy part of coloring. Techniques are nothing more than creative suggestions on how to apply marker or pencil color.
They don't teach you where to put the color.
They also don't explain why to put it there.
Which is why techniques never lead to artistic growth.

WHAT IS COLOR WONK?
Color Wonk is an intermediate level artistic coloring community.
Each month, we tackle a fun new art lessons— but the real difference is how we approach Wonk projects.
Color Wonks play it zen. Zero pressure. Zilch in the intimidation department.
We're learning and we're growing but we're not rushin' to do it all today.
THIS IS A COLLECTION OF THREE COLOR WONK PROJECTS FROM SUMMER 2024
All three classes are retired from the Color Wonk system. This course bundle is the ONLY way to purchase Allium, Ice Cream Twist, and Rosie Gets the Blues.

Professional Illustrator, Amy Shulke introduces you to the basics of artistic coloring
Color Wonk projects are fun but they also ask you to think a little deeper.
Not everyone can go to art school but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from the methods and mindsets taught there.
Basically, I went to art school so you don’t have to! I’m distilling the best of what I learned into small lessons you can practice on the weekend.
Improve your coloring by improving how you think about color

Coloring may be your hobby but learning is fun too!
IT'S TIME FOR A NEW KIND OF CLASS:
-
SKILL
Control markers and pencils with accuracy. When the mechanics of coloring becomes automatic, your mind is free to concentrate on the important aspects of art.
COLORING IS EASIER WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORRIED ABOUT TECHNIQUE
-
VERSATILITY
What we do with markers and pencils isn't magic. Coloring Theory should work with watercolor, pastels, or any other medium. It's not about the product, it's how we use the color.
COLOR IS UNIVERSAL. COLORING LESSONS SHOULD BE TOO
-
INDEPENDENCE
"How to color ice cream" is useless unless you plan to color ice cream for the rest of your life. With fine art concepts, you can apply the lesson to an endless variety of objects.

No problem. Colored pencils are much easier than markers!
I don’t do anything fancy with pencils, anyway.
We cover the pencil technique in every demo and most marker people pick it up easily in just a few projects.
-
Sorry, but no. We’re doing fine art techniques which require artist grade alcohol markers. Despite what you’ve heard or read, inexpensive markers are not the same as Copic and Olo.
Inexpensive markers can not handle the kind of heavy layering and color mixing we do in my lessons.
If you absolutely must use student or craft grade markers, then I’m the wrong instructor for you. There are other instructors who can teach you to use them.
-
In my own work, I substitute colors all the time— but this is a class and you’re here to learn.
Not all markers and pencils behave the same way, even when the colors look similar. It’s a matter of chemistry and at this intermediate level, it’s safe to assume you’re not adept at making the correct chemical substitutions.
But here’s the important part: every substitution you make increases the difficulty of the project. Fighting with your art supplies will distract you from the lesson goals.
For your benefit, I highly recommend sticking to the recommended colors. They were chosen for a reason.
