Realistic shadows are not gray. When you take time to observe the color of shadows, you’ll find a range of interesting and beautiful colors. To color with greater artistry and style, start with a base of violet Copic Marker. Then borrow colors from your objects, adding hints with colored pencil.
What color are real shadows?
It’s time to color the cast shadow…
Hold on while I grab my gray Copic Markers!
Noooooooo!
You can do better!
When was the last time you looked at a shadow?
I don’t mean when was the last time you saw a shadow.
I mean when was the last time you really looked at one.
If you paid attention, you’d never grab those gray markers again!
Real shadows are full of interesting color.
When you cast a shadow onto grass— it’s not gray, it’s a glorious green.
When you cast a shadow onto brick— it’s not gray, it’s full of lovely russet tones.
And even when you’re dealing with a white surface, like my baby pumpkin here, you’re going to see amazing colors reflected off your objects.
A pumpkin shadow has blazing bits of orange in it.
I’m not kidding. Go look right now!
If I can offer you one short bit of advice that you carry with you for your entire coloring lifetime, it’s this:
Never assume the color of anything you color.
Always look.
Because life is far more interesting and so much more incredible than you assume.
