“Use blue markers on the blue egg. Use pink markers on the pink egg.”

That’s pretty much how you learned to color, eh?

Use the yellow blending combination here and switch to a purple combination over there,

And never, ever, never let them touch!

Color segregation makes coloring easy to learn and easier to teach but hang on a minute…

Aren’t you an advanced student?

Why are you letting basic beginner rules hold you back?

Let’s put the joy of playtime back in your coloring!

Play, like an artist.

We can retain the depth and dimension you love about blending combinations…

But add a glorious burst of color interaction which is guaranteed to make you smile.

SPECKLED EGGS

An advanced independent study in color bouncing and reflection

Professional Illustrator, Amy Shulke shares her color bouncing methods

Color is the ultimate play toy!

I’ve spent decades doing freelance illustration and trust me, not every job is fun.

Let me show you the quiet technique I developed for secret color interplay— amusing myself but also adding artistry and a boost of realism to plain color.

Let’s ditch the standard blending combinations and have some fun!

  • Advanced Level

  • Copic Markers & Prismacolor Pencils

  • Minimal Supply lists

  • Maximum Impact

The world is full of rainbows. It’s your job as an artist to celebrate them wherever you can.

Speckled Eggs is an ADVANCED INDEPENDENT STUDY

WARNING: THIS IS NOT A STANDARD CLASS!

This study project is for advanced colorers who are comfortable working without step-by-step demonstrations.

Students will be asked to select their own colors and blending combinations (hints provided). The detailed guidebook provides a summary of the coloring process + tips and over 200 WIP photos but there are no follow-me “do this, then do this” videos to work from.

Amy demonstrates several sections of the project in the video but most sections are deliberately left uncovered. Truly advanced students are capable of intuiting a process and making their own color decisions.

If you don’t enjoy working independently, please do not purchase Speckled Eggs.

What’s an Advanced Independent Study?

In college level art programs across the world, students are given just enough guidance to begin an art assignment. This allows fledgling artists the opportunity to develop a unique project, personal style, and more importantly, to develop the skills to plan ahead and troubleshoot when issues arise.

If someone’s always holding your hand and showing you what to do, you'll never become a functioning artist.

If your coloring skills have plateaued, it’s not because you haven’t been given enough instruction. Chances are, you’ve been given too much!

Amy gives you a complete project with lots of hints and encouragement on how to cross the finish line. In the beginning, you can rely heavily on the videos and guidebook but we encourage you to peek less with every Advanced Independent Study.

Become the artist you were born to be. Independence is the first step.

Enroll today for instant access to the detailed supply list, line art, photo references, printable guidebook, and set of videos. No waiting.

This is an advanced independent project so we don’t start with the video right away. Consult the photo reference and guidebook while you color egg by egg through the project. Every egg is detailed in the book but there are also prompts to make your own color decisions.

Watch the videos for more inspiration but remember, for independent coloring, we don’t hold you hand too much— and that’s a good thing!

ADVANCED COLORING SKILLS REQUIRED

Beginner techniques like blending, layering, and underpainting absolutely will not be covered in this course.

To master beginner skills before taking Box of Colors, I have two skill-building courses. More info here.

Underpainting is used extensively in this course and will not be covered in depth either. To learn the process, I have a pre-requesite class. More info here.
